AYSO
Why Become a Youth Referee?
As an AYSO Youth Referee, you'll have the opportunity to:
- Earn community service hours
- Develop leadership and communication skills
- Build confidence and independence
- Learn responsibility and decision-making
- Stay active and connected to the game
- Give back to younger players in your Region
- Build friendships with fellow referees and volunteers
Many Youth Referees discover that officiating becomes one of the most rewarding parts of their AYSO experience.
Community Service with Purpose
If your school, club, honor society, or organization requires community service hours, youth refereeing offers a meaningful way to fulfill those requirements while making a positive impact.
Instead of volunteering outside the activities you already enjoy, you can earn service hours while supporting younger players and helping your Region provide a great soccer experience for every family.
Be sure to check with your school or organization regarding specific service hour requirements and documentation procedures.
No Experience Required
You don't need previous refereeing experience to get started.
AYSO provides free training and support to help Youth Referees learn the Laws of the Game, understand player safety, and gain the confidence needed to officiate matches successfully.
If you're willing to learn, we'll help you every step of the way.
Training & Support
AYSO offers free referee training designed specifically for new officials.
Training opportunities may include:
- Youth Volunteer Registration
- Safe Haven Training
- Concussion Awareness Training
- Referee Certification Courses
- In-person field training and mentorship
Many training requirements can be completed online at your own pace, while experienced referees provide guidance and support throughout the season.
