Become an AYSO Referee
Be Part of the Game
Referees play an essential role in creating a safe, fair, and enjoyable soccer experience for every player. They help ensure games are played with respect, sportsmanship, and a focus on learning and development.
Becoming an AYSO referee is a rewarding way to support young athletes and stay involved in the game. No previous referee or soccer experience is required, and AYSO provides the training, resources, and support needed to help volunteers succeed.

  • Why Become a Referee?

Referees do much more than enforce the Laws of the Game. They help create positive experiences that allow players to learn, grow, and enjoy soccer.

As an AYSO referee, you'll have the opportunity to:

    • Support players in a safe and fair environment
    • Help children develop sportsmanship and respect for the game
    • Stay active and involved in the soccer community
    • Learn new skills and gain confidence
    • Build friendships with fellow volunteers
    • Make a meaningful impact on every match

Many referees find that volunteering on the field provides a unique perspective on the game and becomes one of the most enjoyable parts of their AYSO experience.

  • No Experience Required

Many AYSO referees begin with little or no prior soccer or officiating experience.

AYSO's referee training program is designed to teach volunteers everything they need to know to confidently officiate matches. New referees receive instruction on the Laws of the Game, player safety, match management, and age-appropriate officiating techniques.

You don't need to know every rule to get started. If you're willing to learn and support young athletes, AYSO will help you every step of the way.

  • Training & Certification

AYSO provides free referee training and certification opportunities for volunteers.

Depending on the referee role and level of certification, requirements may include:

    • Volunteer Registration
    • Background Check
    • Safe Haven Training
    • SafeSport Training
    • Concussion Awareness Training
    • Referee Certification Courses

Many required courses can be completed online and at your own pace. In-person training opportunities are also available and may include classroom instruction, field sessions, mentoring, and advanced certification courses for referees who wish to officiate at higher levels of play.

AYSO's referee development program supports volunteers from their first match through advanced levels of officiating.

  • Flexible Volunteer Opportunities

AYSO offers a variety of referee opportunities to fit different interests and schedules.

Whether you choose to officiate occasionally, referee regularly throughout the season, or pursue advanced certifications and higher levels of competition, there is a pathway for every volunteer.

Many referees enjoy the flexibility of selecting games that fit their availability while continuing to develop their skills and confidence.

  • Ready to Get Started?

Every game needs a referee, and every referee helps make the AYSO experience possible.

By becoming a referee, you'll play an important role in supporting players, coaches, and families while helping create a positive environment where young athletes can thrive.
