AYSO

Why Coach?
Coaching is one of the most rewarding ways to get involved in your child's soccer journey.
As an AYSO coach, you'll have the opportunity to:
- Help players build confidence and self-esteem
- Teach teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect
- Create a fun and positive learning environment
- Make a lasting impact on young athletes
- Build connections with players and families
- Be actively involved in your child's soccer experience
Many coaches find that volunteering as a coach becomes one of the most memorable parts of their family's AYSO experience.
No Soccer Experience Required
Many AYSO coaches begin with little or no soccer background.
AYSO has developed training programs specifically designed to help volunteers quickly gain the age-appropriate knowledge and skills needed to coach successfully. Coaches receive guidance on player development, practice planning, game management, safety, and creating positive learning environments.
You don't need to be a soccer expert to become a great AYSO coach. If you're willing to learn and support your players, AYSO will help you every step of the way.
Training & Certification
AYSO provides free training and certification opportunities for coaches.
Depending on the age group and level of play, coach training may include:
- Volunteer Registration
- Background Check
- Safe Haven Training
- SafeSport Training
- Concussion Awareness Training
- Age-Appropriate Coach Certification Courses
Many required courses can be completed online and at your own pace. Additional in-person training opportunities are available for coaches seeking advanced certifications or coaching at higher levels of competition.
AYSO's coach education program is designed to support coaches at every stage of their volunteer journey, from first-time coaches to experienced leaders.
Time Commitment
The time commitment for coaches varies depending on the age group and program.
Most coaches attend weekly practices and games during the season, along with completing required volunteer training and certifications before the season begins.
In many AYSO Regions, coaches have flexibility in selecting practice days and times that work best for their team and schedule. Practice frequency and field availability may vary by age group and local AYSO Region.
